Sorrow’s
Apprentice

“Sorrow when given space, compassion, and presence, has the potential to walk us deeper into awareness of ourselves, our emotions, and our shared experiences…

…Over time, sorrow revealed to me how she also carries love, joy, and hope.”

Sorrow’s Apprentice

A tender reflection of how grief is so often an echo of love.

Sorrow’s Apprentice is Melissa VanderZyden’s postmodern memoir that weaves together her personal journey with grief, clinical insights, and the transformative nature of loss.

Grief is everywhere. And, culturally, we don’t always know what to do with it.

Grief is quietly woven into our everyday lives and loudly present in moments of loss, transition, and uncertainty. And yet, for something so universal, we’re not given many tools to actually be with it. We’re expected to fix it, move past it, or package it up neatly and carry on. But grief isn’t something to solve. Grief is something to move with, to tend to, and to live alongside.

This book isn’t about loss. It’s about living with grief in all its forms. This book is meant to be something you can return to when you need language for what you’re experiencing, or words to offer someone else.

Blending Melissa’s personal story with her clinical insight, this book sits somewhere beyond traditional self-help. It’s a resource, a reflection, and a reminder that grief isn’t something we’re meant to carry alone.

My hope is that you come back to it, share it, and find a little more understanding and a little less isolation in its pages.
